Nutrition on the Road

I am on the road a lot during the month of May, travelling for different things every weekend.  Being on the road means more eating out and less of making my own meals, but that doesn't mean that all of my good eating habits have to go out the window.  With a little bit of prep work, I can take many of my favorite staples on the road and continue to eat foods that are healthy and I enjoy.

One thing that I have been loving lately is Eat Smart Sweet Kale salad.  It is much cheaper than buying a salad from a restaurant and it is great both on its own or as part of a meal.  When I am on the road, I will take a tupperware container and a fork with me and then swing by the grocery store and pick up this, or a Dole Chopped Salad, for a quick, easy and cheap meal on the road.

Anyone who knows me know that I love fruits and vegetables.  People have asked me what I my favorite food is and I will often say the fruit or vegetable I am loving at that moment.  I have also been known to walk around with a 2 lb bag of full sized carrots, munching on them.  When travelling, I think about what fruits and vegetables travel well and are easy to eat while driving.  I always take a cooler with me that I can pack with fresh fruits and vegetables.  My favorites for travelling are carrots, snap peas, apples and grapes.  Bananas are a tricky one.  I love bananas but can be easily squished and will brown quickly.  If taking bananas, buy ones at the store that are quite green, as they will ripen quickly during travel, wrap the stems with saran wrap or a produce bag from the grocery store and then pack them at the top of your food bag.

Getting protein while travelling can be challenging, but with a little bit of planning, it doesn't have to be.  Hard boiled your eggs and Greek yogurt are easy to take with you and eat on the road, and just need a bit of prep ahead of time.  Hard boil eggs before you leave and if you keep them in their shell in a cooler, they will be ok for a couple of days.  Greek yogurt is another great protein source and easy to take on the road.  Freeze individual servings of Greek yogurt before you go; they will keep your cooler cold, and be a great protein rich snack.

Chickpeas are a protein source that are also a good source of fibre.  Two brands of roasted chickpeas I commonly see in grocery stores are Three Farmers Roasted Chickpeas and The Good Bean.  Both brands come in a variety of flavors and can be a good alternative to chips with looking for a salty, crunchy snack that travels well.

What are your favorite healthy foods to take with you while travelling?
